On September 3rd, 2019 the Gates opened and welcomed one of its most frequent correspondents. Irene Urbanowicz Garabedian (born 3/12/31) the daughter of Josephine Karpicz and Isador Urbanowicz, passed away at the home of her loving daughter, Lisa, where she had resided for her final five years, During that time, visitors would frequently stop by to visit Lisa, but the fact is they were often there to see Irene whose smile, wit and sense of optimism were irrepressible. Faced with monumental medical setbacks, from which she never complained, Irene had a heartfelt concern for the difficulties of others that she placed above her own challenges, and she was the first to offer an encouraging word or sound advice. In addition to her daughter Lisa, Irene is survived by her daughters Dawn Team and Nadine Garabedian and son Steven Garabedian, grandchildren Taylor Team and Jamie Garabedian, a large herd of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, among whom is Virginia Nichols who occupied a special place in Irene's heart. Irene was predeceased by her husband Charles P. Garabedian, son Charles D. Garabedian.

When Irene wasn't reading, it was probably because a UCONN basketball game (men's or women's) was on the air, and her devotion to the Huskies was acknowledged at center court in February '19 with other breast cancer survivors through the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Irene was a member of Holy Cross Church in New Britain which her father helped build. It seems that during the construction process a line of communication was established as Irene was remarkably conversant in the strengths of the various saints and communicated with them regularly. Whenever someone had a problem, she knew exactly the party to call upon, and her prayers, which she generously disbursed, were, more often than not, answered. Heaven is a better place today.
