Sophie H. Prestash, 98, a longtime resident of New Britain, CT passed away Friday, February 7, 2020 at the Hospital of Central CT @ New Britain General after a brief illness. Sophie was born in Glastonbury, CT and was the daughter of the late Peter and Mary (Dziadyk) Halun. She was an exceptional wife and mother. Sophie cared deeply for her family and showed her love in many ways. She delighted in baking and cooking for her family, and was especially proud of her famous homemade pierogis. Sophie’s cooking was always the center of every holiday. She retired from Fafnir Bearing after thirty-one years and was a member of Fafnir Union Retirees. Sophie and her late husband, Walter Sr., who also worked for Fafnir Bearing, loved to travel. They especially enjoyed winters in Daytona, Florida.

Sophie is survived by her son Walter Prestash, Jr., her daughter Jean Phippen and her husband Charles, her grandchildren Steven Prestash, Dawn Lassy, Denise Linger, Michael Phippen, Amy Phippen, and her great grandchildren Jeffrey Prestash, Colby Prestash and Ashley Lassy. Sophie is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Preli and several nieces and nephews and a special son-in-law Ted Linger. Sophie was predeceased by her husband Walter Prestash, Sr., her daughter Judy Linger, her two sisters Mary Zesut and Ann Catan, her two brothers John Halun and Joseph Halun. Sophie’s family would like to thank the nursing staff and Patient Care Assistants at Ledgecrest Health Care Center and The Hospital of Central Connecticut for the compassion and kindness shown to Sophie during her stays.
Funeral rites for Sophie will be held Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 10 a.m. from the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT. Committal service and final resting place will be in St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, 269 Osgood Ave., New Britain, CT. Relatives and friends may call at the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Directions to funeral home – I-84 east or west - exit 37 (Fienemann Rd) right off exit – one mile down on right.
