Obituary

The world was blessed with the birth of Mr. Archie Lee Gray on September 3,1925, in Reynolds Ga.to the late Mr. John and Mrs. Clara B. Gray on May 14,2020. Archie entered into eternal rest peacefully while sleeping, he was 94 years old.

Archie was reared and educated in Reynolds Georgia along with his parents and siblings. The family relocated to Atlanta Georgia and he spent a period of time in the Historic Downtown Atlanta area. He always shared stories about living so close to where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was raised. The Grays eventually left the south and migrated up north living in Boston Massachusetts and New York, before Archie adopted New Britain Connecticut as his hometown.

Mr. Gray was preceded in death by his loving, devoted wife Ossie Gray, parents Mr. John and Mrs. Clara B. Gray, four sisters Bertha Gray, Emmie Lee Gray Lawhorn, Evelyn Gray McLaughlin, Elouise Delores Gray Lowe, mother in law Minnie Thornton, and Grandson David Miller.

Growing up in an era when often education was put on hold and entering into the work force was a priority. However, that did not stop Archie from going on to become a successful man overcoming the obstacles. He landed various jobs and later skillfully learned the trade of welding. Employed fulltime at Tuttle & Bailey where he worked for many years until he retired in 1979 due to health issues.

Mr. Gray lived a very active life and was well known and loved throughout the city of New Britain.

After a long courtship with the love of his life Ossie, they joined hands and entered into the bond and Holy Matrimony on November 3,1967. He passionately talked about the day he laid eyes on Ossie and said "he knew she was the one". To this union they loved and raised one daughter. They were married for over 40 years until she passed in 2007, leaving Archie mourning, brokenhearted, and a widower, He never remarried.

Archie lived an active life up until his 90's. He enjoyed traveling with Ossie visiting 48 out of 50 states and Canada. Family was very important to him and he enjoyed family gatherings to include parties and cookouts in the backyard. He was a free spirited man and would help anyone that crossed his path. He looked forward to his morning walks. Rain, sleet, snow or sunshine he walked faithfully putting in a couple of miles daily. He was an active member of the NAACP with the New Britain branch.

In his free time Archie w\as passionate about horse racing. Visiting many tracks to watch the races. He was a faithful patron at the OTB in New Britain where he spent a lot time watching the races and socializing with friends. He enjoyed morning meet ups with his friends at McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts where they would sit for hours talking catching up on the races or reading the newspaper. His acts of kindness went from person to person down to his cats, he faithfully fed stray cats and making sure they had shelter.

A proud strong rooted family man he went above and beyond to provide for his family. Archie made sure that his life experiences was a learning tool for all of us .He made sure he instilled valuable morals and teaching us the importance of being kind to everyone, if you can help someone do so and to make sure you get a good education.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories to one daughter Audrey Tanksley Augusta Georgia, one sister Mrs. Clara (Dorsett) Newbold Atlanta Georgia, Four generations of grandchild including 8 grand children, 14 great grands,7 great-great grands and 1 great great great grand). A host of loving nieces, nephews cousins and loving friends. A special devoted long time neighbor of over 50 years The Anderson Family.

Entrusting someone to provide excellent dignified care to our grandfather was a very hard decision, however, we would like to extend our gratitude of special thanks to the dedicated staff of Seasons Hospice (New Britain Ct).

Graveside services will be held Friday May 22, 2020 at 11am. Fairview Cemetery the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT has charge of arrangements. To extend condolences to the Gray family or to share a memory of Archie, please visit SHAKERFUNERALHOME.COM
