Obituary

Marie Carrubba, 82, of Rocky Hill, CT died at Hartford Hospital Wednesday, April 28, 2021 after a short illness. Marie was born in the Ukraine and was the daughter of the late Michael and Maria (Sywa) Neilko. She worked in a variety of places including Society for Savings, NCR and retired after eighteen years at CNG in Hartford. Being from Europe, Marie loved to travel with her lifelong friend of seventy-two years, Fern Russell. Neither one could speak very good English, yet ventured to Italy, Greece, Spain and Russia. Marie also ventured to Paris, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and several Caribbean Islands. She loved flowers and spent hours gardening. Her favorite were the lilacs. Marie loved to knit, crochet and was an accomplished seamstress. She had a great sense of humor and supported the theatre. Marie was a charter member of The Bushnell and The Goodspeed Opera House. She was very devoted to her Ukrainian heritage and was very active in her church, St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox church in New Britain. Marie was very generous, caring and kind. She made friends very easily and knew how to make everyone feel special. Rather than complaining she complimented. Marie knew everyone from political constituents to growers of garlic. There was not a place off of the beaten path that she did not know.

Marie is survived by her son Michael Carrubba and his wife Michele and their two daughters Gabrielle and Olivia, her daughter Donna Carrubba and her partner Phil DiCarlo of Marblehead, MA., her step-sister Natalie Bonas of Canada. Other surviving family members include brothers-in-law Salvatore Carrubba and Robert Carrubba and his wife Bea, and sister-in-law Rosalie Menard and her husband Del. Lastly, her three cats, "yellow kitty", Sal and Suzie will forever miss her. Marie was predeceased by her husband John, her life-long companion and her step-sister Adele Meskauskas.

Funeral rites for Marie will be held Monday, May 3, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 54 Winter St., New Britain, CT. Committal service and final resting place will be in St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, 269 Osgood Ave., New Britain, CT. Relatives and friends may call at St. Mary Ukrainian Orthodox Church Monday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The Paul A. Memories of Marie and her Father Mike go back to when they lived on Ann St adjacent to the old Dujack Hall. Marie was always adventurous and smiling and sharp. We kind of went our own ways as we raised our families but would always acknowledge each other and remember where we came from. She was the most important thing in Mike's life and he was very proud of her and his grandchildren. More recently she, her husband John, and I would often chat after church during coffee and. She certainly had a lot of common sense, which is not too common in these times. I will miss her.
Our most sincere sympathy to her family which meant so much to her.
